While sitting with my table group in class, we were discussing this question of which character from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee can be the so called "mockingbird" of the story. There are many different characters that we took into consideration such as Scout, Atticus, Jem, Heck and even Bob Ewell. After discussing more and reading quotes from the story, we decided that the mockingbird has to be Jem because although scout is the narrator and we see the story through her eyes, we mostly watch Jem grow up and mature as the time passes. At one point in the story Atticus said something about how his father told him that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they are innocent and do nothing but sing their hearts out and this brings back the idea of Jem's innocence. One question I had was, why Harper Lee decided to chose Jem out of all of the characters she had in this story. It just really makes me wonder what made her chose him because she had other characters with equal importance such as Atticus, but what ever her reasoning was, i'm pretty sure it was a good one because her idea of having us watch Jem grow up and mature through the eyes of scout was brilliant.
